Common Sub-Zero Error Codes

Sub-Zero refrigerators are some of the best refrigerators on the market. They keep food fresher longer and offer the latest in appliance technology. However, when Sub-Zero error codes pop up, it can be frustrating.

Common Sub-Zero errors range from excessive compressor run times to defrost cycles under heating. For many of these error codes, you can do quick fixes yourself, like checking for proper door closure or cleaning the condenser.

We’ve gathered the most common Sub-Zero error codes for you here, along with their meanings and how to fix them.

Sub-Zero error codes will appear on the digital control panel, located inside along the top edge of the refrigerator, as shown in the image above.

Sub-Zero Error Code EC40

Meaning: Excessive Freezer Compressor Run – This means that the freezer won’t stop running.
Fix It: Depending on the internal temperature of the refrigerator, you will need to do one of two things:
If the internal temperature is high:
• If the refrigerator door is not open, but the temperature is still high, it is suggested that you contact a appliance repair service.
• If the internal temperature is normal:
• Clear error code: press and hold Door Ajar Alarm Key for 15 seconds
• Clean condenser

Sub-Zero Error Code EC50

Meaning: Excessive Refrigerator Compressor Run – This basically means that your refrigerator runs constantly or too much. Compressor run time is affected by the amount of food in the refrigerator, temperature of that food, external and internal temperature and length of time the door is left open.
Fix It: If you receive error code 50, there are a few different things you can do to fix it:
• Make sure nothing is blocking the door from closing and sealing correctly.
• Clean the condenser if it is dusty or dirty.
• Remove anything blocking the condenser fan blade, or tighten it if it’s loose.
See if the sealed system is leaking.

Sub-Zero Error Code EC24

Meaning: Defrost Underheat – This means that the defroster is not heating high enough to do its job.
Fix It: An EC24 code fix also depends on the temperature:
We recommend calling a Sub-Zero appliance repairman if the temperature is high.
If the temperature is normal:
• Make sure the condenser is clean and clear of any dust or debris.
• Clear the error code by pressing and holding the Door Ajar Alarm Key for 15 seconds.

Sub-Zero Error Code EC 06

Meaning: Thermistor Inconsistencies – This means that the evaporator thermistor in the refrigerator read inconsistent temperatures on several occasions. It can also mean that the thermistor shorted for longer than ten seconds or read open.
Fix It: Sub-Zero recommends contacting a Factory Appliance Repair Center to service your refrigerator.

Sub-Zero Error Code EC20

Meaning: Faulty Defrost Bi-Metal Operation – A bi-metal defrost thermostat prevents the refrigerator from overheating while it’s defrosting.
Fix It: Turn of the refrigerator circuit breaker. Wait 30 seconds and turn it on again. If error code EC20 does not resolve itself, contact a Sub-Zero repair center.
